Ebac Northern League Division 2 - Tuesday 20th January 2026 Grangetown Boys Club 3 v 0 Park View AFC
Park View travelled to Teesside on a cold windy Tuesday night looking to bounce back from Saturday's 1 - 0 defeat at Ryton. They went into the game knowing a win would lift them from 7th place in the table up to 2nd.
Would they be up to the task against a side struggling at the other end of the table? Well, on the night, the answer was an emphatic NO! Grangetown just seemed more up for the occasion and PV were well short of their best.
Micky Nelson was forced into one change from his starting XI at Ryton with Michael Mallaburn returning to the USA he brought back the fit-again Brandon Young. Nelson doubled the changes with a choice of his own as well.
Brandon's brother Frankie was promoted from the bench to play alongside him in midfield with Brad Hughes dropping to the bench. It was also nice to see 16-year-old Ollie Taylor return to the bench after a while out with injury.
The pitch given the weather that has been around was far from perfect but not in as bad a shape as was perhaps feared. But allied with the swirling wind it did make it difficult to get the ball down and play it around.
That contributed to a scrappy encounter for the first twenty minutes or so as both teams struggled to come to terms with the conditions. Park View having more of the ball but not able to create anything of note.
When the opening goal came on 23 minutes it was an opportunist moment for the home side that took advantage of poor play by Park View. It stemmed initially from a poor Dylan Robson back pass to James Hughes.
The ball sticking in the pitch and looking as if it would fall to Lewis Martin. But Hughes was alert and raced miles from his goal to slide the ball away under Martin's challenge. 'Boysie' collecting the loose ball and playing it wide left.
It found Oscar Mahoney who crossed into the PV box and their skipper Dylan Wilkinson did well to get in front of Martin to head out for a corner. Andy Doddy took it and swung it into the near post.
Hughes came for the ball but blocked by several bodies in front of him missed it completely and there was Benji Urwin almost on the goal line to tap the ball home as he got in front of Jamie Frizzel.
The response from Park View was a ball forward from Wilkinson that found Stephen Siyanbola on the edge of the box with his back to goal. He turned sharply and then drove a terrific right foot effort that was inches over the bar.
Boysie buoyed by the goal were pushing forward and enjoying some possession and getting into the PV box. James Carr getting in on the right byline before putting in a cross that Wilkinson cleared for a corner.
Alex Carr took it and swung it high and dangerous into the six-yard box where Hughes punched it well to clear. The ball falling to Mahoney who lashed a long range effort well over the top.
Grangetown just seemed to be a bit sharper and more committed than their opponents. Alex Carr finding Urwin on the edge of the box who layed a nice ball back for Doddy to hit.
His shot from about 25-yards out deflecting wide of F Young for another corner. This time PV cleared the incoming ball from Alex Carr well. Then Alex Carr set-up Martin on the edge of the box.
The Grangetown forward controlling the ball really well before spinning past Robson and driving a shot that had Hughes diving full length to his right but went wide both of the keeper's dive and the near post,
A neat Park View move ended with a rare shot at goal. A lovely ball forward by B Young finding Siyanbola who laid it off well to find Charlie Loveday. He jinked inside to a central position but his 20-yard shot went over the bar.
PV almost conceded a second right on the stroke of half-time following two defensive errors. A throw down the line saw Loveday slice a clearance giving Urwin space and time to cross.
His ball into the middle was unconvincingly dealt with by Wilkinson who could only divert it straight to Martin who was about 12-yards out. With only Hughes in front of him the forward's shot lacked power and easily saved by Hughes.
It was a big chance and with the half-time whistle going shortly afterwards the home team may well have been reflecting in the changing room that they'd missed a golden opportunity to double their lead.
They need not have worried as following another scrappy opening to a half they did double their lead on 53 minutes and again there were question marks about the Park View defence.
There was a stoppage in play for an injury to be dealt with when Grangetown had the ball just inside the Park View half on the right touchline. Play was restarted with a drop ball to Doddy.
He immediately sent the ball into the PV box. No-one in white reacted quick enough as Mahoney took a great touch and then drilled a low right foot shot from an angle six-yards out past a helpless Hughes.
Worse was to come for Park View. Before they had a chance to recover or reset, Boysie made it 3 - 0 on 55 minutes and again the visitor's need to look at their reaction and defending.
A throw-in from Grangetown skipper Kieran Harnett midway in the PV half on the left found Urwin on the edge of the box. He had too much time to turn and lay a ball into the path of Martin.
The striker getting in front of Wilkinson who couldn't recover in time as Martin steadied himself about 8-yards out and shot past Hughes who had no chance of making a save.
Three down and seemingly out of it Nelson turned to his bench with Zac Boddy coming on for Jacob Mallinson and just afterwards Park View had a penalty appeal turned down.
A Robson long throw from the right was flicked on by Frizzel and then Wilkinson causing confusion. B Young nipped on to the loose ball and as he attempted to drive through a gap between two defenders went down.
It looked as if he'd been tripped but it wasn't an easy one to spot from the referee's viewpoint as he waved away the claims from Park View.
Park View made two further substitutions on 63 minutes with Brad Hughes and Sam Beattie coming on for Frankie Young and Siyanbola. The former almost making an quick impact.
Robson's long ball from the back freed Ben Gallagher to get into the box and he crossed low across goal to the back post. B Hughes intelligently laying the ball back to Loveday just outside the six-yard box.
Loveday's first time half volley was reasonably well struck but in a packed penalty area a Boysie defender got across and diverted the ball for a corner. B Hughes floated thee kick in but Grangetown cleared it easily.
Ollie Taylor then came on for B Young before the home side dealt with another half chance of an opening from Park View. This time it came from a free-kick out wide on the right.
B Hughes delivered and the ball was scrambled away only to the edge of the box. Gallagher drove it back in where it took a deflection and spun up in the air. Leo Strange in the Boysie goal taking no chances as he punched the ball clear.
Loveday then almost got Boddy in on goal with a delightfully chipped left foot pass from the centre circle. The substitute striker looked to be clear. But Harnett came across really well to put Boddy off and the ball was cleared as it went loose.
Then a moment that compounded Park View's misery on the night. Reyhan Grimaud's cross from the right saw Taylor break into the box and nod the ball forward. Strange got their first and launched his clearance downfield.
Wilkinson seemed to get caught in two minds as the ball drifted over his head and into the path of Urwin who looked to have a clear run on goal. Wilkinson in trying to get back turned and bundled Urwin over almost accidentally.
But it was deemed by the referee for the challenge to be denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity and Wilkinson was shown a straight red card. The resulting free kick 22-yards out was fizzed just over the bar from Harnett.
Park View almost snatched a consolation goal as time expired with a neat move involving three of their substitutes. B Hughes playing a good ball forward from halfway that Taylor picked up well.
He threaded a lovely ball to the left finding Boddy in space. His low cross picked out Loveday on the edge of the box who controlled it well and then fired it just over the bar to end Park View's chances of taking anything from the game.
So, perhaps a result no-one really saw coming and a real disappointment for Park View who failed to move back into the play-off positions. For Grangetown their biggest ever win in the Northern League lifted them out of the bottom four.
A real reflection of a poor all-round display where virtually no-one came out of the game with any individual credit was the choice of the player of the game award. It went to Taylor who only completed a cameo of the last 25 minutes.
Two defeats in a row for Park View in the League now and three in all competitions without a goal scored. They need to be much better in their next game with league leaders Redcar Town due at The Riverside on Saturday.
