Ebac Northern League Division 2 - Saturday 11th April 2026 Billingham Town 1 v 0 Park View AFC

In the end the result hardly mattered as both Seaham Red Star and FC Hartlepool won their respective fixtures as Park View fell to a second successive 1-0 defeat.

They had to win to have had any last hope of securing the final play-off spot and would then have still be dependant on other's results. In the end their display on the day was not good enough.

It was a damp squib of an ending to Park View's season which in truth despite missing out on the play-offs has still been a good one for this young side. Unfortunately a good season was not quite good enough.

As has been the case recently it was a lack of creativity and effect in the last third of the pitch that cost Park View. On completion of this fixture they may have the best defensive record in the League but up front have been lacking.

Currently and some teams still have games to play there are 15 sides in the Division that have scored more goals than Park View. It's clear to see where the deficiency lies.

This indeed being another afternoon where they failed to create enough clear cut chances to give them an opportunity to take what started as a much needed win but ended in a pointless exercise.

Charlie Loveday failed a pre-match fitness test and came out of the starting XI although he did take a substitute's vest. Zac Boddy was also relegated to the bench after a series of starts.

Returning to the starting XI were top scorer Stephen Siyanbola and midfielder Brandon Young who had recovered from the injury that had been keeping him out of the side.

On a very blustery day Park View kicked off with the wind at their backs. The game starting five minutes late due to a late replacement of one of the assistant referees.

Park View almost created the first opening of the game with a sweeping move from left to right started by a great diagonal ball across the pitch by Jamie Frizzel.

His ball finding Jacob Mallinson who held it up well before releasing Reyhan Grimaud on the overlap. In full flight Grimaud fired in a low cross that Lennox Barry did well to clear out of his box in front of Siyanbola

Both teams struggling to adapt to the windy conditions and a dry bumpy surface but then disaster struck for Park View who gifted their hosts a goal. It came from nothing on nine minutes.

Dylan Wilkinson squared a pass to Ollie Taylor on halfway. He failed to control it and was too easily dispossessed by Josh Stiff who had a clear run at the PV box. Dylan Robson the only covering defender came across to cut down the angle.

Stiff spotted that this gave acres of space to centre forward Harry Close who was in effect unmarked. Stiff pushed his pass into Close's path. The burly striker controlling well and advancing into the Park View box.

As James Hughes came off his line to try and cut down the angle Close kept his composure and from 8-yards slotted the easy finish into the gaping net to register his first goal of the season putting his side in front.

Park View almost got back into the game straight afterwards. Wilkinson driving forward from central defence over the halfway line and finding Siyanbola inside the Town box with a probing forward ball.

Siyanbola battling hard almost turned into a good shooting position but was crowded out. He laid the ball back to Niall Armstrong who inside the box struck a good effort on target but it was blocked well by a Town defender.

Close having netted his first goal of the season almost doubled that and his side's tally when a long clearance from his goalkeeper George Briggs caught the PV defence and allowed him to run through on goal again.

This time though in a one-on-one situation Hughes was the victor as he made a great block. The ball almost spinning back to close but Ben Gallagher made ground to cover for Park View and get the ball to safety.

After getting a gift of a goal themselves, Billingham almost repaid the favour for Park View. May Leighton turning the ball back into his own box where Briggs needlessly dived and smothered the ball giving away an indirect free-kick.

It was about 10-yards out. Gallagher touched it to Siyanbola who did well with his left effort to beat the line of Town defenders on the goal line only to see the ball crash off the underside of the bar.

Siyanbola was showing up well as Park View chased an equaliser and did well to rob Reece Bickerton on half-way before sending Armstrong away for a run on goal.

Armstrong's progress was cut short by Nzang Ken's Julien who came across brilliantly and at speed to nip in front of Armstrong and clear the ball away from danger just when the Park View forward thought he was in on goal.

Then from a Robson long throw Jamie Frizzel got a great flick on towards Siyanbola but Briggs was off his line quickly to smother the ball before the big striker could get a shot away.

As the half came to a close there were two massive incidents that both went against Park View. Both could and would have changed the influence of the game had they gone in favour of the luckless visitor's.

But with no VAR available and only one viewing it was difficult to confirm perhaps what the naked eye thought it saw. However, the Park View Management Team on the sidelines did feel hard done by.

Firstly Wilkinson up in attack and pushing his side forward once again put in a great cross from the left. Armstrong went with Bickerton to contest the ball about six-yards out.

In explicably Bickerton went full length at the ball and punched the ball clearly which shot past Briggs into the net. Was it an equaliser for Park View and a red card for Bickerton. Perhaps a penalty and red card? The answer was no.

The referee deeming that the reason for Bickerton's actions were caused by a push from Armstrong on him. Very debatable and dubious though it looked it was a free-kick to Town in the end.

Shortly afterwards Hughes hit a long clearing kick from his box. The ball took a good bounce for Park View and Siyanbola set-off to chase it down. Had he got to the ball he would have been one-on-one with Briggs.

That he did not was down to a challenge from behind by Bickerton who brought him down intentionally. Surely a Direct On Goal Scoring Opportunity denied and a red card for Bickerton?

No, again this time the referee did give Park View a free kick and showed a yellow card to Bickerton saying the covering defender Lennox Barry 'might' have got around to challenge Siyanbola. It did not look that way to PV.

Mallinson took the resultant free kick but the Town defence cleared well and continued to defend well for the remainder of the half enabling them to take their one-goal lead into the dressing room.

Knowing that only a win would help it could have been expected that Park View would have pushed hard after their half-time team talk. However, the start to the second half was very scrappy and lacked purpose from both sides.

A Mallinson free kick midway inside the Town half was floated into the home box where Wilkinson got to the ball first. But his header lacked the power and direction to trouble Briggs as it drifted wide.

On 55 minutes Park View replaced Taylor with Harry Laydon. Town though went the closer to scoring when a Stuart Hackett in swinging corner caught the wind and Hughes scrambling backwards across his goal.

Fortunately for Hughes and his side the ball went narrowly over the bar and nestled on the roof of the net and not inside it. Grimaud then won a corner off Leighton on the right as Park View pushed forward.

Mallinson delivered deep to the back post where Frizzel got up well and headed the ball down and inside the six-yard box. But no-one from Park View was alive to the loose ball and Briggs gathered it in gratefully.

James Watt had come on for the home side in place of Marley Casey and he went close to doubling Billingham's lead with his first involvement. On the break Close found Watt some 20-yards from goal.

He got a shot away but Gallagher had shown great recovery skills to get back and partially blocked the shot which went just wide of Hughes' right-hand post. Hackett's resultant corner easily cleared by Park View.

On 69 minutes Park View made a double change. Zac Boddy coming on for Armstrong and Mallinson being replaced by Sam Beattie who was returning from injury.

Beattie having the best chance of the second half when Laydon released Grimaud on the right with a searching pass. Grimaud crossed low finding Brandon Young who laid the ball back to Beattie about 10-yards out.

Beattie getting his shot away but not perhaps with the power he would have liked. It was on target but Ken's Julien was in the right place at the right time to make a crucial block.

Despite there being a good ten minutes to go Beattie's effort was the last one worthy of note from Park View who huffed puffed and pressed but were always controlled by a resolute Billingham defence who held firm.

Town were at times pushed deep but they always seemed to have a defender on hand when needed to smash the ball away from danger and thwart Park View's efforts to equalise.

When the final whistle went it was with an almost accepting Park View being condemned to their fate with hardly a whisper raised nor a punch landed in anger. Results elsewhere going firmly against them as well.

It all meant Park View's season ending in rather tame fashion. After being in a play-off spot virtually all campaign they just fell away at the crucial business end of the season. No doubt though they will regroup and go again in 2026/27.
