Tough Day For PV's Youngsters As They Crash Out Of The Vase

The dream of Wembley is over for another season for Park View AFC. The trip to North Counties East Premier League side Knaresborough Town always looked a tough task. And so it proved on a day when Park View never really got going.

Much of that was down to the vastly more experienced Boro' side that play at a level above PV at Step 5 and controlled the game throughout. Their experience and game management outweigh Park View's undoubted endeavour.

A day when Park View fielded a squad where no-one was above the age of 20 and eight of the squad were under-18s. That included three 16-year-olds one of which was goalkeeper Mallie Clayton making his senior debut.

Clayton coming in for the unavailable Davy Carter as the fourth keeper PV have employed between the posts in their seven competitive games so far. He was the only change from the side that had drawn 1 - 1 with Darlington Town.

From the off on a rock-hard brown baked bobbly surface it was obvious that Park View were going to find it hard to play their normal passing style of football. Town were more direct but also putting the balls into good areas.

They stretched the Park View defence from the off and used their wide players well to put real pressure on and looked very lively in doing so. Park View finding it difficult to get the ball up the park.

However the Park View defence with Jamie Frizzel and Alex Clark in particular looking solid protected their young keeper in the early going and it was a full 11 minutes before the first effort on goal.

A ball up to centre forward Alex Ingham was laid back into the path of Jack Degruchy who from the edge of the box hit a good strike on target. Unfortunately Ingham was in the way and blocked his own side's effort.

A corner won by Luke Stewart off Carter Bell gave Degruchy a chance to deliver. His pinpoint ball in found Dan Thirkell at the back post unmarked but he headed over from 8-yards out.

The first real clear cut chance fell to the home side on 24 minutes. Ingham mishitting an effort badly but it fell fortunately to Stewart who advanced into the box one-on-one with Clayton.

The PV keeper doing really well to close down the space and angle so that when Stewart hit his right foot show on target the keeper was able to deflect it away to safety.

Park View were struggling to get a foothold in the game but good work by skipper Ben Gallagher did give Niall Armstrong a chance to test The Boro defence as he cut in from the left.

With no-one in front of him Armstrong tried a shot from distance but it wasn't cleanly struck and it was smashed clear inside his own box by Cole Wildin avoiding bringing keeper Jake Turnbull into play.

From a Reyhan Grimaud long throw where Frizzel and Clark had gone forward a quick counter attack from Knaresborough almost caught PV out. The ball reaching the lively Slater Barnes-Cook on the left wing.

His deep cross to the back post saw Stewart coming on to the ball but his header only went inside the centre of the box. A scramble ensued with the ball coming back to Stewart who lashed it wildly wide from about 8-yards out.

Constant pressure was now coming from the home side. Three corners in quick succession were just about dealt with by PV. Clayton making a couple of punches clear and Frizzel a great clearing header to avoid danger.

But the ball just kept coming back time and time again and on 41 minutes it was no surprise that Town went ahead and even less of a surprise that it came from yet another corner.

Barnes-Cook swinging a ball inside the six-yard box that Clayton and his defenders didn't deal with and Ingham was in the right place at the right time to allow the ball to hit him on the shins and divert it into the empty net.

No more than Knaresborough deserved and it already looked a long way back for a Park View side that was struggling to make any forward impression. They did respond well with a couple of corners of their own but to no avail.

Frizzel then inadvertently finally tested Turnbull in the home goal as he pumped in a deep ball from the left wing that saw the keeper back-peddling quickly and just managing to turn it over the bar.

From Jacob Mallinson's in-swinging corner Turnbull showed a clean pair of hands to make a good catch at his near post to help maintain his side's one-goal advantage.

At the other end Boro skipper Sam Leverett becoming ever more influential found the tricky Barnes-Cook on the left with a good ball. Once again the wide man delivering a good cross into the box that Clayton punched away.

It was picked up about 22-yards out by Degruchy who was tripped by Markus Giefalk. Leverett trying his luck with the free-kick that was straight at Clayton who saved comfortably.

It was the last action of a first 45 minutes dominated by Knaresborough but also one where Park View had done well defensively to restrict the home side's efforts and were still in the game.

However, The Boro continued to dominate from the start of the second 45 minutes and within 5 minutes of the re-start doubled their advantage with a second goal.

It came from a left-foot cross whipped in from the right by Leverett. The ball travelling right to the back post over the PV defence where Barnes-Cook stole in unmarked inside the six-yard and had the simple task of heading it home.

The cross perhaps should have been stopped but to have someone in so much time and with so much space inside their six-yard box was poor defending from all in the Park View back line.

Park View brought on Brandon Young and Bobby Gough for Frankie Young and Giefalk as they went more attacking in their approach and it almost paid off when they missed a great chance to pull a goal back.

Gallagher breaking well from half-way before playing a good ball out left to Armstrong. The Park View forward doing well to come inside and then lay a great ball square into the box for Zac Boddy to run onto.

Boddy though on his weaker right side with only Turnbull in front of him failed to hit the target with his effort that flew wide and the glorious opportunity was lost.

The home side replaced Stewart with Aaron White and his first involvement almost brought a third goal for Town. A brilliant ball forward by Barnes-Cook releasing him through on goal with seemingly only Clayton to beat.

But Frizzel managed to cover across superbly and put White off his stride just as he was about to pull the trigger and he mis-controlled the ball which went well wide.

With about 15 minutes to go Park View made their three remaining substitutions with Lewis Stephenson, Lewis Marshall and Kieran Woods all coming on for Mallinson, Boddy and Grimaud.

It made no difference other than to give the three youngsters some valuable experience and minutes as the home side who brought Jack Lazenby on for Wildin continued to dominate.

Frizzel and Clark combining with their team mates to just about keep Boro at bay as once again a succession of corners rained in. Most taken on the Boro right and swung in by Leverett.

Finally on 81 minutes the Park View defence cracked again and from yet another Leverett corner. Another dangerous in-swinger saw Lazenby challenge Clayton inside the six-yard box.

Although it appeared that Clayton had palmed the ball into his own goal it was Lazenby that wheeled away in celebration and the home side's announcer credited perhaps generously with the goal.

Game over the hosts almost made it four on 86 minutes when Frizzel was adjudged to have fouled Lazenby 25-yards from goal. Skipper Leverett stepping up and smashing his effort fractionally over the bar with Clayton struggling.

The last chance of a disappointing afternoon for Park View which will not live long in their memory. However lessons have to be learned for the youngsters and it is hoped going forward that that experience used as a positive.

It needs to be as Park View return to League action on Tuesday night with a very tough looking fixture at high-flying Boldon CA who are in superb form. Park View looking to arrest a five-game run without a win.
