Durham County FA Frank Pattison Challenge Cup 1st Preliminary Round - Wednesday 9th September 2026 Park View AFC 6 v 0 Sunderland West End

A home game against old friends Sunderland West End now a mid-table Wearside Premier League side gave Park View a chance to bounce back from the disappointment of Saturday's home league loss against Sunderland RCA.

Whilst it is great to see that West End have risen from the ashes following their resignation from the Ebac Northern League, Park View were in no mood to be charitable neighbours as they welcomed them back to The Riverside.

Park View made two changes from the side that lost to RCA. Markus Geifalk having served a one-match suspension coming back into the midfield for Ollie Taylor who dropped down to the bench.

Kieran Woods was also promoted from the bench swapping places up front with Niall Armstrong who joined Taylor on the bench.

Park View set their tone right from the off and should have been in front inside the first two minutes. Nathan Conroy chipping a lovely ball over the West End defence for Charlie Loveday to run free in the inside left channel to the byline.

From there he superbly pulled the ball back into the six-yard box where PV skipper Ben Gallagher burst on to the great opportunity. Unfortunately his side-foot effort from close range went wide off the post.

PV were awarded a free-kick just outside the box in a dangerous position that Conroy clipped into the box where it was cleared to the edge of the box. Gallagher picked it up and drove into the box.

With space opening up Gallagher drove the ball across goal towards the far post but was denied the opener by a superb diving save from Tom Morrison in the West End goal. He turned the ball aside with his left hand.

Jacob Mallinson delivered the corner to the back post finding Jamie Frizzel who instead of perhaps going for goal headed across the face and West End cleared.

Then it was Mallinson who went close from 12-yards out with a cracking shot on target that Ben McDonald did brilliantly to block and preserve the game's score less status.

Park View were really dominating now and virtually camped in the visitor's half. Gallagher trying his luck from 22-yards mishit his effort but it fell to Conroy inside the box but another block this time by Ryan Bussey denied him.

Geifalk played a great ball through the West End defence in the inside right channel who showed superb trickery to get into a crossing position that Dasvid Hodgson did well to clear for a corner that came to nothing.

A Park View throw-in level with the 18-yard box gave Grimaud the chance to show his long range throwing ability. His delivery found Conroy inside the six-yard box. Conroy turned well but his goal bound effort deflected off Kian Patton.

Mallinson delivered and Alex Clark was up well and met it inside the six-yard box with a firm header that was brilliantly kept out by Morrison with a marvellous reflex save.

Clark up for another Grimaud long throw should have given Park View the lead. The throw was cleared to Mallinson who delivered a great cross into the middle. Clark was unmarked 10-yards out but headed well wide from a great position.

Then Loveday picked up the ball on the edge of the box twisted and turned into space and then from 16-yards let fly but once again Morrison was up to the task and made another good diving stop.

Next it was Frizzel in an advanced position who received Bobby Gough's probing diagonal ball from the right inside the box on the left. His driving left foot shot calling Morrison into action again to make another great block.

Finally on 24 minutes Park View broke through and this time there was nothing Morrison could do to deny them taking the lead. From the back Clark played a good ball forward finding Conroy on the edge of the back centrally.

Conroy playing an even better little pass inside the box to Loveday and from 10-yards out there was nothing West End could do to prevent the forward's left-foot clinical finish from hitting the back of the net.

Mallinson who was fouled by Oliver Avery on the left touchline delivered a free-kick to the back post. Frizzel headed the ball dangerously into the centre box where Geifalk met it only to see Bussey block his effort.

The ball coming back to Loveday who curled an excellent effort from about 20-yards out that was just over the bar a Park View laid seige to the West End goal.

Then good play on the left by Gallagher saw him deliver a great cross into the area which was met superbly with a deft flick by Woods that beat Morrison but was only just too high and went over the bar.

On 38 minutes Park View did double their lead with a slightly fortunate goal. Geifalk finding space centrally in midfield decided to launch a 25-yard effort at goal. It deflected off Brad Wilson on the edge of the box and fell to Loveday.

Park View's top scorer's control was instant and he gave himself space to crash a clinical finish from about 12-yards out into the waiting net to give Loveday his seventh goal of the season.

The visiting side under the cosh for almost the whole half did finally get an effort on goal with the last action of the first 45 minutes. Gough tripping Ryly Deehan about 25-yards out.

Wilson lined up the free-kick and drove it over the wall. The ball dipping as it dropped on target but Davy Carter dived well to his right to grasp the ball making a tidy save. It brought the half to a close.

That last moment of the first half gave West End a boost as they started the second half in better fashion. Wilson cutting in from the right before squaring to Curtis Foster who hit a first-time effort from 22-yards just over the bar.

It was though only a temporary reprieve for West End who fell further behind on 52 minutes when Park View netted their third of the night. Another long Grimaud throw caused confusion with Mallinson finding Conroy.

Conroy with his back to goal swivelled well before crashing a great effort that cannoned onto the underside of the bar and bounced out and there was Clark in the right spot at the right time to head home from close range.

Park View replaced Woods with Armstrong on 54 minutes and seconds later West End should have pulled a goal back. Avery's cross from the right was brilliant and in between Park View's defenders.

Wilson getting on the end of the ball inside the six-yard box with only Carter to beat but he somehow put his volley over the top from a great position to waste the gilt-edged chance.

If the visitor's thought their hosts were going to sit back and cruise through the remainder of the game they were wrong as they continued to look for opportunities to add to their lead.

Another long Grimaud throw and Clark flicked it on but the ball was cleared to the edge of the box where Mallinson retrieved it. He crossed to the back post finding Conroy free with the goal at his mercy.

His first time shot once again brought the best out of Morrison who somehow got across and made a magnificent point blank save right on his goal line much to Conroy's disbelief.

Park View made another change on the hour mark with Frankie Young coming on for Geifalk before Morrison was called into action once more to save his side.

Gallagher driving from midfield played a lovely 1-2 with Mallinson before getting the ball to Armstrong just inside the box. Armstrong driving low only to see Morrison diving to his right to grab the ball well.

Then it was Conroy setting up Armstrong again moments with good interplay on the edge. Armstrong striking the goal bound sweetly and there was Morrison again to make another great block.

Park View then brought their last three substitutions with a triple change. Lewis Stephenson, Brandon Young and Taylor coming on for Grimaud, Gough and Conroy.

Taylor involved almost immediately. Gallagher breaking into the box on the left and crossing to the back post to find Taylor who pulled the ball back to Loveday who turned the ball just over the bar from about 8-yards.

West End were to their credit not throwing in the towel and always had an out ball up front where Dara Akisanya work tirelessly and ensured that Park View could not relax completely at the back.

Armstrong had looked really lively since coming on and was certainly not hesitating to test Morrison out as he brought the best out of the West End keeper again with a shot from 18-yards that Morrison saved really well.

Almost inevitably when United finally got a fourth it was Armstrong that netted. Loveday the provider with a lovely dinked cross on the right hand side of the box that Armstrong met with a cushioned volley from six-yards out into the net.

That was on 75 minutes and six minutes later the Loveday-Armstrong combination struck again with Loveday showing great unselfish team play after sprinting into the West End box with Morrison in front of him.

Instead of going for goal and a possible hat-trick he squared the ball to the back post to the unmarked Armstrong who gratefully tapped home his sixth goal of the season.

Still Park View pushed. Loveday slicing through the visitor's defence once again was denied an elusive hat-trick by that man Morrison who produced another point blank save as Loveday tried to slide the ball past him from 12 yards out.

Gallagher then found Mallinson in space who played a ball across the box to Loveday whose left foot curler from 14-yards beat Morrison but was just over the bar.

But on 87 minutes Park View did make it six of the best. Taylor making a decisive run down the right hand side of the box before pulling the ball back. There was Gallagher bursting into the box to smash it home from 8-yards.

The last moment of a thrilling attacking performance from Park View almost brought a seventh and a hat-trick for Loveday. Taylor again the supplier with a right-wing cross finding Loveday in the centre of the box.

Another on target effort almost bringing another goal but there was Morrison once again with his final excellent reflex save to end the game and not give Park View seventh heaven.

This was a game Park View were meant to win and obviously did. But the manner and performance they put in was emphatic, dominant and highly impressive and in truth six goals probably did not flatter them

No complaints but they could easily have doubled their tally. But credit to Morrison. It cannot be often that a goalkeeper will concede six goals and still walk away with their team's player of the game award.
